There is a Vietnamese proverb that says: “One tree accomplishes not much – Three trees join together to make a high mountain”. There is no better example of such pulling effect of multiple small individual contributions to make a big impact than the case of John Smallwood. John is an Australian from Brisbane who strongly supports the mission of Maison Chance and who has found a way to combine his love for cycling and his support for Maison Chance.

In 2009, John who was already semi-retired, competed in the Grafton to Inverell Cycling Classic to raised funds for Maison Chance. In his own words: “As I look back on my trip (to visit Maison Chance), I realize I was extremely lucky to have visited Vietnam and to get involved at Maison Chance. It is hard to explain, but the more you give to them, the more you receive in return. In my whole time there I never heard one whinge or complaint. Indeed their attitude

is so positive and fun-loving; I believe no-one has ever told them they are disadvantaged or handicapped and if they were told they would not believe it. I really care about these people and they really do need all the financial assistance they can get."

Nonetheless, John’s sponsorship for Maison Chance raised more than $20,000 last year. And again in 2010, he repeated the challenge and raised a further $10,000.
In fact, John’s way of sponsoring Maison Chance is just one example of how you can create your own sponsorship idea and be sure of getting our logistic support. Such individual sponsorships can be extended to such projects as:
- Organizing a fundraising event in your community;
- Collecting clothes, school supplies and medical equipment;
- Selling the paintings and products of Maison Chance.
